SOCHUM

The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee

The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, or the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), focuses on issues dealing with fundamental human rights in the international community. It has historically dealt with topics like the treatment of refugees, protection of children, indigenous issues, advancement of women, racial discrimination, criminal justice, and international drug control. As technology advances, new ethical problems and hazards arise.

Due to SOCHUM's responsibility of finding and solving current day's issues, the committee in this addition of YIAMUN'23 will be tackling the two of internet's biggest problems.

Agenda Item 1

The problem of hate speech and internet activism in social media.

The first agenda item is the problem of hate speech and internet activism in social media. Some sources indicate hate speech online has been linked to a global increase in violence toward minorities and internet activism causes chaos in countries but are these statements factual and if something and if yes, what should be done.

Agenda Item 2

The social media censorship's effect on the freedom of expression and if it should be enforced globally.

Second agenda is the social media censorship's effect on the freedom of expression and if it should be enforced globally. This has been a huge discussion since the birth of social media yet no clear line has been drawn on what should be allowed to be expressed and if social media should be under surveillance with the use of censorship.
